LO4: Be able to record cinematic footage
This clip is from scene 2 where the character wakes up from his coma, In this video we have the main character getting his friend out of the house, we use an over the shoulder shot to connote power and to show he is more powerful than his friend and also to intensify the film as you can't see the friend so the viewers don't know what's fully happening. Lighting is used in and outside of the house in this scene we use the sun on the side of the friend and the side of the main character is dark this contrast the behaviours of each character, both characters connote to light and dark and this can be seen with the lighting we use in this scene as Toby's character is showered in sun light and Ellis's character is shrouded in darkness the same can be said with the outfits as well Ellis's character is wearing a is a black hoodie and Toby's character wearing a white sweatshirt.
This is scene 3 where our character gets out of his coma and is still robbing people and doing petty crimes. This clip shows a close up of a pedestrian about to eat but then gets his food stolen off him, we did a close up to denote the characters hand movement and to get his facial expression. Close ups are used in films to show Repetition, Characterisation, Situation and Timing, We add music in this to add suspense to the scene as we have the character approaching the victim the music denotes that's the main character has bad intentions, we also include slow panning camera movement and interesting shots similar to the shots in 'About a girl' Short film.
This is the last scene from our film as in this clip we have the main character jumping off the side of the building. This is an establishing shot to finish off the film as we have a beautiful scenery behind the character about to die so it shows a contrast of life and death in one shot, this is done in many of films to denote peaceful deaths or unexpected events. We use the setting as a production technique in the last scene as the sky is eye catching and grabs the audiences attention and sucks them into watching the film. We turned the ISO up for this scene to capture the sky this made it brighter and more eye catching for the audience and made it more appealing to look at the increase of the ISO make the overall scene bright while Ellis's character is in it this will give the idea that Ellis's character knows what he has done and is looking for redemption but during this entire scene the camera is still over his shoulder giving his character.
We use mise en scene in this scene elements to dress the main character as he wears clothing that someone who lives an unhealthy life and a life of crime. Our footage has met generic conventions and replicated conventions similar to other short films that are in the Thriller/ Dramedy genre. This is through things such as lighting, acting, set design, and costume design. All of these elements come together to form a thrilling story which includes both comedic and dramatic scenes.
When we did the garden scene we lowered the shutter speed so we had motion blur when one of the characters get stabbed showing that he's swift with his had and it was a quick movement meaning the victim couldn't see it coming. Our film shows Generic conventions as we have certain sounds and music to intense the scenes, certain camera movement and angles that represent the film as a thriller then you have certain parts of the film to show the comedy side like how the character keeps on slipping and how serious he takes petty crimes. We used lighting to our advantage to darken scenes making it more thrilling for the audience and adding suspense.
Our change in settings help create narrative and meaning as we tweaked certain settings like ISO and Shutter speeds to create a slightly different picture that followed our narrative of the short film and played along well with the genre of the film.
